Bangkok’s vibrant streets are a haven for food enthusiasts, offering a delightful mix of world-class cuisine and local specialties. On a recent exploration, I stumbled upon a little restaurant nestled in Saphan Kwai – Jong Dimsum. As a passionate dim sum aficionado, I couldn’t resist indulging in a culinary adventure at this restaurant.
This restaurant occupies a modern two-story shophouse, exuding a welcoming and energetic atmosphere. However, what truly sets Jong Dimsum apart is its focus on Betong-style dim sum.
Unfamiliar with Betong? This southern Thai province boasts unique culinary traditions, where classic Cantonese dim sum gets a delightful southern twist. Expect bolder flavors here, with influences from both Malaysian and Chinese cuisine. This intriguing approach to dim sum piqued my curiosity, and I eagerly perused the menu.
The Food
The ha gao (shrimp dumplings) were incredibly fresh, boasting perfectly translucent wrappers. Each bite was a delightful explosion of flavor. The Shrimp siu mai was also equally delicious. However, the true star of the show was the charcoal barbecue pork bun. Unlike the classic red-roasted pork filling, this version featured a smoky, grilled filling encased in a slightly blackened bun. The combination of textures and tastes was simply divine.
Delicious Shrimp Dumplings
Not all can be simply delicious, right? Well, the steam spareribs were a little chewy and not as tasty as expected. The prices are very reasonable though.
The restaurant is on a main road and there is no parking available. If you are driving here, the best place to park would be Big C – Saphan Kwai and walk a couple of minutes to the restaurant. Alternatively, you can take a elevated train to BTS Saphan Kwai station. The BTS station is just a few minutes away from the restaurant.
